Choosing a Qur’an: Memorisation, Tajwid, or Translation?

Bookshop shelves now carry dozens of Qur’an editions — memorisation copies, colour-coded tajwid, translations, sectioned mujazza’ sets, pocket sizes through to large mosque copies. To avoid buying the wrong thing, it helps to know the three main categories and what each is actually for.

1. Memorisation Copies (Mujazza’)

Designed to support memorisation, typically laying out each page so that it ends at the end of a verse. That consistency matters: the visual memory of a page stays the same every time it is revised. These editions often include checkboxes for daily targets, a juz index, and are sometimes split into smaller volumes — five juz each — so students can carry only what they are working on. Suited to memorisation programmes, advanced Qur’an classes, or anyone memorising seriously.

2. Tajwid Copies (Colour-Coded)

These mark the rules of recitation with distinct colours on the relevant letters — a specific colour for idgham, another for ikhfa, another for elongation, and so on — so the reader can see how a word should be pronounced without having first memorised the entire body of rules. Particularly useful for those learning to recite correctly, including new Muslims, children, and adults correcting long-standing habits.

3. Translated Copies

These place a translation beside or beneath the Arabic text, sometimes with a brief commentary. The right choice for anyone who wants to follow the meaning while reading rather than only reciting the Arabic — suitable for family study, class settings, or daily reading meant to be understood.

4. Combinations and Other Factors

Many publishers now combine two or three features in a single mushaf — a translation with colour-coded tajwid, for instance. Beyond the features themselves, consider the format (A5 for daily carrying, large sizes for a mosque or home, pocket size for travel), the binding (hardcover for durability, a zip cover to keep out dust), and confirm that the copy has been through the official verification process required by the religious authority in your country.
